Frequently Asked Questions

Who can install a collection cabinet?

Retail pharmacies, long-term care facilities, hospice, licensed law enforcement, drug treatment centers, and hospitals and clinics with on-site pharmacies. All but licensed law enforcement must register as an authorized collector with the DEA.

How do I become a collector?

You must modify your DEA registration to obtain authorization to be a collector. Click here to modify your registration online.
  • There is no cost to modify your registration and the process can be completed in under five minutes online.
  • If you supply LTC facilities you will need to list each of them on your application.
  • Once completed, a new DEA certificate can be immediately printed showing that a facility is registered as a collector.

Where can I install my collection cabinet?

Pharmacies:
In the immediate proximity of a designated area where controlled substances are stored and at which an employee is present (e.g., can be seen from the pharmacy counter).
Hospitals/Clinics:
In an area regularly monitored by employees, and shall not be in the proximity of any area where emergency or urgent care is provided.
Long-Term Care Facilities:
In a secured area regularly monitored by long-term care facility employees.
In all facilities, your cabinet must be securely fastened to a permanent structure so that it cannot be removed.

How do I install my collection kit?

You can find full instructions on how to install your collection kit here.

What do I do when my collection cabinet is full?

The inner liner must be sealed immediately upon removal from the permanent outer container with two employees present. The outer box can then be sealed and shipped with the prepaid shipping label affixed to the box. You can view complete removal instructions here.

What happens to the items that are returned?

Items are incinerated at a waste-to-energy incineration facility, burned as fuel to power a turbine that creates electricity. This mitigates environmental harm and provides a valuable resource to the public.

What items are accepted in a MedCollect cabinet?

Prescriptions, prescription ointments, pet medications, prescription patches, over-the-counter medications and vitamins can all be deposited in the MedCollect cabinet.

What items are not accepted in a MedCollect cabinet?

We cannot accept needles, inhalers, aerosol cans, hydrogen peroxide, thermometers, or liquids in our cabinets.

Where can I find information on the DEA regulations?

Is this program available in all 50 states?

MedCollect is available in all 48 contiguous states. Unfortunately due to shipping rates we are unable to offer our program in Alaska or Hawaii.
